Bike for Good offers discounted membership to Glasgow’s Bike Share Scheme, Nextbike, as well as one-to-one advice, group rides, route-finding tips, and road skills.
The Bikes for All project, which is socially inclusive and supports people on low income, works in collaboration with community groups in Glasgow’s most deprived areas.
Thanks to the initiative, people with long-term conditions, the unemployed, homeless or those in temporary accommodation, refugees and asylum seekers have access to bikes, allowing them to travel to appointments and interviews without having to worry about transport costs.
The scheme removes financial barriers of buying a bike and the logistical aspects of storing and maintaining a bike.
In August 2020, there were almost 3500 Nextbike rentals by Bikes for All account holders covering a total of 5,900km. Now 10% of all Nextbike journeys in Glasgow are made by Bikes For All users.
One participant said
I use the Nextbike for everything: shopping; appointments; visiting friends and I ride it for pleasure. It has made me healthier because I cycle every day.
Renewed confidence and bike access lead to users cycling for 60% of short journeys. Before the scheme, users cycled just 14.5% of their short journeys.
61% of Bikes for All participants were from the most deprived communities in Scotland. 49% identified as Black or minority ethnicity, 26% were seeking aslyum, 28% were unemployed, 42% were women and 9% were homeless.
