Health and Fitness Officer at KA Leisure, Helen went through great lengths to support walk leaders and walkers during lockdown.
Helen said: “I’ve been with KA leisure all my life, so when the opportunity to get involved as a project coordinator came onto my doorstep, I had to take it!
“I have done the walks for a long time and already knew a lot of the walkers from teaching my aerobics classes, so I already had the rapport there. Some of them have been going on the walks for a long, long time.
During lockdown, we started doing virtual walks. We had a WhatsApp group and would have group video calls with people walking and those shielding. We’d all have a chat and it was as if everyone was together.
“It was a bit of a surprise actually to find out I’d won I’d won this award and everyone in the group were really chuffed for me when they found out. I’ve had lots of lovely cards and flowers; it’s been really nice.”
Helen was among 13 different winners at the 11th annual volunteers awards.
