Walking helps Denis manage his stroke and early onset dementia

Denis started walking with the Stirling Community Hospital walk at the beginning of 2017 after he was recommended to join by his neighbour who is a Health Walk Leader.

Denis is in his mid-50’s and has a diagnosis of early onset dementia, in addition to having a stroke, which he has made a good recovery from. When he first started walking his balance was poor and he was very quiet.

The project coordinator, has seen a big difference in Denis since he started attending the weekly walking group. She said:

The transformation over the last few months is amazing. His walking is much steadier and he is much chattier and at ease. He actively promotes walking to other people who are living with dementia.

Recently, he was willingly interviewed by the University of Stirling for a dementia research project.
